The University of Southern Mississippi, officially known as Southern Miss, is a large public research university located in Hattiesburg, which is the county seat of Forrest County, situated in the US state of Mississippi, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 45 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Hattiesburg is also the principal city of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses Forrest, Lamar and Perry counties.
The University of Southern Mississippi was founded on March 30, 1910, as Mississippi Normal College. It is the only institution in the state of Mississippi, and one of the few universities in the country to hold accreditation in all four fine arts emphasis areas – dance, art, music and theatre, being considered among the best universities in the nation. In addition to the main campus located in Hattiesburg, Southern Miss also has multiple permanent branch campuses, including in Long Beach, MS, Jackson County, and Pontlevoy, France.
Southern Miss is academically organized into 5 colleges, through which it offers its students educational programs in various fields of study, which are: College of Arts and Letters, College of Business, College of Education and Psychology, College of Health and College of Science and Technology. In addition to the reminded colleges, the university also offers the following programs: George R. Olliphant Honors College, Graduate Studies, International Studies Program and Fully Online Programs: Master of Science in Sport Management and Master of Science in Sport Coaching Education.
The athletic teams from Southern Miss are known as the Golden Eagles, who compete in NCAA’s Division I Conference USA, in various sports including in football, in which they won the national championships in both 1958 and 1962, at the time when the university was known as Mississippi Southern College. The Golden Eagles also compete in basketball, softball and baseball, in the last sport reminded making their first ever appearance in the College World Series, in 2009.
The University of Southern Mississippi has a long list of notable alumni, among the most resonant names being: Tom Malone - musician, CBS Orchestra - Late Show with David Letterman, Blues Brothers Band, Kathleen Koch – correspondent for CNN, Robert L. Stewart - former NASA Astronaut and retired Army brigadier general, Robert Hyatt - author of Cray Blitz a World Chess Champion Computer Program, Michael Boley - NFL Linebacker, New York Giants, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable in various fields, after attending Southern Miss.
